Joe Calzaghe, born March 23, 1972, in Hammersmith, London, England, and raised in Wales, is one of boxing’s most accomplished super middleweights and light heavyweights. Known as “The Pride of Wales” and “The Italian Dragon,” Calzaghe was celebrated for his remarkable hand speed, exceptional footwork, and relentless work rate. He retired undefeated with a professional record of 46 wins (32 by knockout), 0 losses, cementing his legacy as one of the greatest fighters of his era and among the best British boxers of all time.

Calzaghe’s career was defined by dominance in the super middleweight division, where he reigned as a world champion for over a decade. He first captured the WBO super middleweight title in 1997 by defeating Chris Eubank in a grueling 12-round bout. Over the next 11 years, he successfully defended the title a record 21 times, breaking numerous records in the division.

One of Calzaghe’s most notable fights came in 2006 when he faced Jeff Lacy, the undefeated IBF super middleweight champion, in a unification bout. In a career-defining performance, Calzaghe outclassed Lacy over 12 rounds, delivering a boxing clinic and earning a unanimous decision victory. The fight cemented Calzaghe’s reputation as the premier super middleweight in the world.

In 2007, Calzaghe added the WBA (Super), WBC, and The Ring super middleweight titles to his collection by defeating Denmark’s Mikkel Kessler in front of a raucous crowd at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales. The victory solidified his status as the undisputed super middleweight champion.

After conquering the super middleweight division, Calzaghe moved up to light heavyweight in 2008, where he defeated boxing legends Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones Jr. In his fight with Hopkins, Calzaghe overcame an early knockdown to win a split decision and claim The Ring light heavyweight title. Later that year, he fought Roy Jones Jr. at Madison Square Garden, recovering from another first-round knockdown to dominate the remainder of the fight, earning a unanimous decision victory.

Calzaghe retired in 2009, still holding an undefeated record, a rarity in professional boxing. Over his career, he demonstrated a unique combination of speed, volume punching, and adaptability, allowing him to defeat a wide range of opponents. Despite criticism early in his career for fighting primarily in the UK, Calzaghe silenced detractors by taking on and defeating elite fighters on the global stage.

His career accolades include being named the 2007 BBC Sports Personality of the Year and induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2014. With an unparalleled resume, longevity, and unbeaten record, Joe Calzaghe remains a symbol of excellence and resilience in boxing.
